The use of computers and the internet alone leads to regular requests to confirm that we are not robots, but human beings. People wear implants that merge with their body and its processes, live in smart homes or share their household with digital assistance systems. The argumentation of this lecture takes up the concept of posthumanism and links it to the concept of habituation. Using the example of near-future series and digitally permeated more-than-human communication, the thesis is pursued that current technological developments not only challenge understandings of the subject, but that a new concept of habituation is also needed, with which various moments can be identified that are integrated into structures and networks of habituation of the posthuman or are organised within them.
2024-10-07T00:00:00+02:00Copyright (c) 2024 Zeitschrift für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft. Using two policy fields, sea rescue in the Mediterranean and combating hate speech on the internet, we propose a cultural anthropological perspective on the punitive turn and the politics of criminalisation. Using the concept of crimscapes, we describe the dynamic landscapes that unfold around criminal justice interventions, in which new figures of threat and vulnerability emerge, moral orders are restructured and new constellations of actors and practices are brought to the fore. By relating different policy fields, understood as local articulations of global dynamics of criminalisation, the concept also points to the ambivalences of this policy, which can also have an enabling and protective effect alongside exclusionary, stratifying and punitive effects. This underlines the need for critical cultural anthropological research that highlights the ambivalences and contradictions of criminalisation and contributes to an informed critique that is not based solely on normative evaluations, but can also draw attention to unintended effects and contradictions in political debates.
2024-10-07T00:00:00+02:00Copyright (c) 2024 Zeitschrift für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft. They research, document, advise and communicate topics of everyday culture. They act in the in-between, as an interface between academia and the public. Their work primarily involves the transfer of knowledge into cultural practice and the exchange of knowledge with universities, specialised societies, museums and civil society institutions. To mark the centenary of the Regional Centre for Everyday Culture in Stuttgart, this article looks back at its past and considers the challenges and opportunities of the future. These include new needs and requirements for counselling in the context of intangible cultural heritage, but also with regard to new mediation formats, online presence and the digital availability of collections and archives. As a further challenge in times of scarce resources and public funding, the work and self-image of the regional centres must also be increasingly aligned with the expectations of the funding bodies and the public.
2024-10-07T00:00:00+02:00Copyright (c) 2024 Zeitschrift für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft. Watzlawikjan.watzlawik@tu-dortmund.de
Lioba Keller-Drescher (Munster) and Birgit Johler (Graz) have been organising the Summer School Museology at the LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold since 2021. In the spirit of research-based learning, the museum becomes a place and object of research for a week. The participants work on theoretical and practical issues concerning the collection, develop curatorial and educational concepts and present the results to the public at the end of the week in the form of an exhibition. In this way, the programme is geared equally towards the need for practical training and young talent in the museum profession, as well as bringing university and museum closer together. The professional improvisation that such a format requires is intended as an impulse for the development of teaching formats in times of AI. Using three posters and six photographs, Jan C. Watzlawik (Dortmund) conducts an interview with the two organisers on the genesis, programme and practice of the Doing Summer School Museology.
2024-10-07T00:00:00+02:00Copyright (c) 2024 Zeitschrift für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft.
